Occupational Therapy NDIS Referral Adelaide
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
An NDIS Occupational Therapist supports people with disability to improve independence and participation in everyday activities. This may include personal care, household tasks, community access, education, employment, and use of assistive technology. Occupational Therapy focuses on practical, functional outcomes that align with NDIS goals.
A referral is not required to access Occupational Therapy under the NDIS. Participants can self-refer, or referrals may be made by support coordinators, plan managers, GPs, allied health professionals, or family members.
A Functional Capacity Assessment is a comprehensive Occupational Therapy report that outlines how a person’s disability impacts daily functioning. It provides evidence to the NDIA regarding support needs across areas such as self-care, mobility, communication, social participation, and community access. FCAs are commonly used for NDIS plan reviews, access requests, or change of circumstances.
An FCA is often requested when:
– Applying for NDIS access
– Requesting increased Core or Capacity Building supports
– Seeking Assistive Technology or home modifications
– Preparing for a scheduled plan review
– Experiencing a change in functional capacity
Assistive Technology includes equipment or devices that support independence and safety, such as mobility aids, bathroom equipment, seating, pressure care, or daily living aids. An Occupational Therapist assesses, trials, and recommends AT to ensure it is safe, appropriate, and aligned with NDIS reasonable and necessary criteria.
The NDIS may fund Assistive Technology where it is considered reasonable and necessary. This typically requires an Occupational Therapy assessment and written justification demonstrating functional need, value for money, and alignment with NDIS goals.
