More info on our wheelchair assessments.
Wheelchair prescription is a highly specialised process that requires more than simply selecting a chair. For individuals living with disability, reduced mobility, chronic illness or age-related functional decline, the right wheelchair can significantly improve independence, safety, comfort and participation in daily life. Occupational Therapists (OTs) play a critical role in assessing, prescribing and justifying wheelchairs for NDIS participants and Support at Home clients across Australia.
An Occupational Therapy wheelchair assessment is a comprehensive, person-centred evaluation that considers how mobility limitations impact daily function and participation. The assessment focuses on identifying a wheelchair solution that aligns with the individual’s physical needs, functional capacity, environment and long-term goals.
For NDIS and Support at Home clients, wheelchair assessments must also meet specific funding requirements, including clear clinical justification, evidence of functional impact and alignment with reasonable and necessary criteria.
Occupational Therapists are uniquely positioned to assess both physical capacity and functional performance, ensuring the prescribed wheelchair supports everyday activities rather than creating new barriers.
Key areas assessed include:
- Posture, balance and trunk control
- Upper and lower limb strength and endurance
- Transfers and pressure management needs
- Fatigue, pain and energy conservation
- Cognitive and sensory considerations
- Home, community and transport environments
- Carer and support requirements
This holistic approach ensures the wheelchair supports independence while reducing risks such as falls, pressure injuries and overuse injuries.
For NDIS participants, Occupational Therapists assess how mobility limitations affect activities of daily living, community access and participation in meaningful roles. Wheelchair recommendations are linked directly to the participant’s NDIS goals and functional support needs.
OTs assist by:
- Determining whether a manual, powered or complex rehabilitation wheelchair is required
- Trialling appropriate wheelchair options and seating systems
- Assessing pressure relief, positioning and postural support
- Identifying required accessories such as cushions, headrests, lateral supports or trays
- Completing Assistive Technology (AT) assessments and reports
- Providing detailed clinical justification to support NDIS funding applications
A well-documented OT wheelchair assessment increases the likelihood of NDIS approval by clearly demonstrating functional benefit, safety outcomes and value for money.
For Support at Home clients, wheelchair assessments focus on maintaining independence, reducing falls risk and supporting safe mobility within the home and community. Occupational Therapists consider how mobility equipment integrates with existing supports and living arrangements.
OTs support Support at Home clients by:
- Recommending wheelchairs that align with current and anticipated mobility needs
- Assessing home accessibility, including doorways, flooring and bathroom access
- Identifying the need for home modifications or complementary equipment
- Ensuring the wheelchair supports comfort, endurance and daily routines
- Providing education to clients and carers on safe use and maintenance
This approach supports ageing in place and reduces reliance on higher levels of care
An incorrectly prescribed wheelchair can lead to discomfort, reduced independence, increased pain and secondary injuries. Occupational Therapy wheelchair assessments prioritise long-term outcomes by matching the right equipment to the person, environment and lifestyle.
Benefits of an OT-led assessment include:
Clear, evidence-based funding justification
Improved functional independence
Enhanced comfort and postural support
Reduced risk of pressure injuries and falls
Increased participation in home and community activities
Occupational Therapy wheelchair prescription is grounded in current best practice, clinical reasoning and functional assessment. By focusing on how mobility impacts everyday life, Occupational Therapists ensure wheelchair solutions are practical, safe and tailored to individual needs.
If mobility limitations are affecting independence, comfort or participation, an Occupational Therapy wheelchair assessment is a critical step toward achieving safer and more effective mobility outcomes.
